Maryland doctor stripped of license after failing to pay child support ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJLA) - A Montgomery County doctor has been stripped of his license to practice in Maryland after failing to pay more than $100,000 in past child support. In response, Michael Duplessie has reportedly fled to Kuwait and set up shop there. Duplessie, an eye surgeon, previously worked out of a Rockville office. Alan Levenstein, a family law attorney who Houlon Berman in Greenbelt, Maryland, says the revocation of his license is an extreme measure thats rarely seen. It tends to light a fire under somebody, he said. Something like this is an extreme measure. Levenstein says professional suspensions are one of the more drastic steps the state can take to get deadbeat parents to pay up - but its a rare move. Marylands Board of Physicians says Duplessies suspension is one of only five ever related to child support. It would most likely be for someone who is in substantial arrears, and theyve tried other things and have really no other alternative but to suspend the license, Levenstein explained. Other steps the state can take in cases like this include suspending a persons drivers license and withholding tax returns and wages. ABC7 News found court records that show Duplessiess ex-wife has tried, winning judgements over the last nine years. Now, the doctors website shows hes moved overseas - taking up practice 6,000 miles from home in Kuwait. Some locals we asked said, regardless of how drastic the move by the state was, it will hopefully send a message to other deadbeat parents.
