Marysville, Wash. — Top teams of third-graders from 26 schools in Snohomish and Island counties will advance to semi-final and final events in the Sno-Isle Libraries Mega-Fun, Biblio-Trivia, Rockem Sockem Third-Grade Reading Challenge this month. The Reading Challenge is a quiz bowl program that encourages children to enjoy reading while improving their literacy skills. Students at participating schools have formed teams of five to eight readers who answer questions based on six books selected by Sno-Isle Libraries staff. The top scoring team from each In-School Challenge moves on to one of five Semi-Final Challenges in March and top teams from each Semi-Final advance to the Final Challenge on March 26 at 7 p.m. at the Rosehill Community Center in Mukilteo. Community members are welcome to attend the events and cheer on the participants. The dates and locations of the events are listed below. Sno-Isle Libraries staff from community libraries partner with their local schools throughout this project. “The partnership between schools and libraries grows stronger as we, together, promote literacy and foster awareness on the value of libraries,” said Jane Lopez-Santillana, children’s librarian at the Oak Harbor Library who also serves as the Reading Challenge coordinator. “It’s rewarding to see the impact on a child when the community supports the library in making reading a priority. The students take pride in their accomplishments and this program allows them to shine as they display their reading prowess.” As a special incentive for students, author Bonny Becker is visiting each of the 26 schools to talk about her book “The Magical Ms. Plum,” one of the books they have read during the Reading Challenge. All participants will receive small prizes and the top scoring team at the Final Challenge will receive a trophy to display at their school. The program was begun in 2012 by the Oak Harbor Library and two Oak Harbor elementary schools. The following year, it grew to include three Whidbey Island community libraries and all Whidbey Island public elementary schools, with funding from the Friends of the Library groups and local community organizations. This year’s funding was provided by a grant to the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, which allowed this popular literacy support program to expand to include 15 Sno-Isle community libraries and 26 schools in Snohomish and Island counties.
