Mas Arai says bonjour. Yup, I was waiting to break this development in my newsletter, but Publishers Marketplace beat me to it . . . French rights to Naomi Hiraharas SUMMER OF THE BIG BACHI, to Editions de lAube, by Pierre Corman at Anna Jarota Agency, in association with Joelle Dieu at Random House. Some interesting details: * This is the first time SUMMER OF THE BIG BACHI will be published in another language besides English. Japan passed on it, translating GASA-GASA GIRL and SNAKESKIN SHAMISEN instead. My agent at the time and I theorized that the subject matter -- atomic bombing and also mention of Koreans in Japan may have been too hot, especially coming from a Japanese American. * Its been 10 years since SUMMER OF THE BIG BACHI has been first published. So in terms of the timing, who would have thunk it? * I believe that it will be published in hard cover first. There will also be an e-book and hopefully a paperback edition. So while it was published at a trade paperback original in the US, it will have a hard cover in France. * A French translator was actually my advocate. Remember when I was asking you guys about how to describe homyu? She was preparing some sample pages. * When will it be published? Not sure, but maybe in 2016. Im beyond delighted, and plan to learn French. Just for the heck of it. And maybe I will go to Paris someday . . . perhaps in 2016.
