Mashoko Back With A Bang : By Millz and Mcpotar (Pics by @QuenceMotion) Magamba Network , an urban culture organization celebrated 7 years of existence last week. To legitimize this milestone, they hosted Mashoko Reloaded,a hip hop and spoken word reincarnation of the year event after about a year of absence . The function was held at the popular Book Cafe in the capital on Saturday the 29th of November . With a line up which boasted of artists in the mould of Noble Stylz, Sharky , Shingi Mangoma , Blackpearl , Umind, Synik among others, it was difficult for a hip hop and Poetry enthusiast to ignore the showcase. Especially with the immensely talented poet Madzitatiguru who just returned from Europe as the MC. The event was meant to commence at 7:00 pm, but for some reason there was a close to 30 minute delay. The first segment of the day was called the People`s podium which allowed members of the audience and artists who are not on the main line up to showcase their talent and abilities. Arcane the poet got the ball rolling with an immaculate piece called Kuna Kinte that touched on humanity, followed by a rapper called Lincoln. Ill Manner as always delivered thought provoking lyrics which justify why he is considered one of the best emerging writers in the hip hop circles. To wrap up the Peoples podium was Glen Norah based hip hop artist who cemented the already vibrant segment with their hit song Hondo Dzemagitare which got the crowd engaged in dance. Spoken word followed and the catalogue heavy ,one was allowed to expect nothing but a mesmerizing session with beautifully crafted words. Tinashe went on stage first with a beautiful poem stating how tired she was of heartbreaks and it got the audience thinking deep. She was followed by internationally acclaimed poetess Wadzanai `Blackpearl` Chiuriri who had a namesake in the crowd Barbara `Blackperl` Maswera of Masofa Panze. At this stage the audience was busy conversating too much than paying attention to what the acts on stage were doing . When U-mind came on stage ,it was worse as people had turned this function into a social gathering with numerous simultaneous chat factions . In relation to this one journalist cum photographer who spoke on condition of anonymity said Im worried about how the crowd is not engaged or connected to these poets. Sanity returned when fast rising hip hop artist Sharky took to the stage with a colourful afro centric outfit. Sharky was perhaps the best act of the night as he got the crowd from the first song Better than most and when he belted two of his unreleased songs as well. With his beads clung around his neck , the energetic performance got hip hop heads like Cashbid, Begotten sun , Noble Stylz , Atenno ,Synik and Trae Young among others showing off their dance moves and nodding in agreement . Nu Alliance and Synik gave us a marvelous performance as expected. They performed in sync and did not disappoint the crowd. Shingi Mangoma in her beautiful African look was very outstanding as well. I watched Noble take the stage with her as he led into his performance. Well orchestrated performance I must say. Noble and BlacPerl (Maswera) were great. Blacperl spat her bars well in Dai Maiziva. A very relevant song especially during the 16 days of activism. Trae Yung joined into ma Born Free by Public demand and later gave us her 5 on it freestyle. Upmost also took us back to the days of “Nhasi Ndakatakurwa” as we mingled while somme went back home. The show was a success as the hip hop and poetry spirit was restored through Mashoko Reloaded . Poet Arcane echoed the same sentiments by saying Mashoko is a great platform for both new and established artists. The vibe is great and it accommodates all the different angles of hip hop. Creative genius Atenno appreciated the work that Magamba Network is putting in but was concerned with the turnout which was not entirely convincing. We want to appreciate Magamba Network for organizing such a good show which attracted the whos and whos of Zimbabwean entertainment like Luckie Aaron , Mariachi , Gwagz , Dj Krimz , Wordzmyth , Quence Motion ,Trae Young ,Meister,Younique, Dj Hollywood ,Tehn Diamond and other faces we couldnt quite capture . It was a great night for hip hop and poetry as well as beautiful music
