Mason DeCosmos mother was adamant that her live-in boyfriend of a few weeks, Kenneth Stahli, had nothing to do with the toddlers death, said state police investigator Dina Pavloudakis. Then, Katlin Wolfert saw her 2-year-old sons autopsy photos, Pavloudakis added. Wolfert knew Mason had injuries, Pavloudakis said. She just never sought medical attention. Every time I asked her why she didnt go to the doctor, Wolfert said she was worried that CPS (Child Protective Services) would be called if she took him. Pavloudakis was one of a few people to testify Wednesday in the ongoing Ulster County Family Court case involving Mason, who allegedly died because of abuse suffered at the hands of Stahli, 27. Testimony is scheduled to continue today, Thursday. Wolfert, 22, is in court to answer a neglect petition — she failed to protect her son and didnt seek medical care for him because of her fear of CPS being called due to Masons visual injuries, according to the Ulster County Department of Social Services. Stahli was indicted on felony second-degree murder, depraved indifference murder of a child. His attorney, Ulster County public defender Andrew Kossover, is in court answering a severe abuse petition on his behalf. Stahlis in Ulster County Jail on no bail. Pavloudakis was the investigator who questioned Wolfert after Masons Aug. 5 death. Wolfert told her that during the last week of Masons life, he pooped out a blood clot…vomited a black substance and had bruises on his abdomen, back, face and groin-area, along with crescent-shaped marks that Wolfert believes were bite marks on his arm, Pavloudakis said. She thought Jace (Stahlis son) had bit him, Pavloudakis said. Wolfert told her that both she and Stahli were concerned about Masons health, but they were also both concerned about CPS, Pavloudakis said. Mason would feel better, than feel sick again, what Wolfert described as a roller coaster, Pavloudakis added. He was an active child and Wolfert told police that she chalked his bruising up to boys will be boys, rough-housing, Pavloudakis said.
