Massage or in Chinese Anmo/Tui Na is probably the oldest form of healing in the world. It has its roots in ancient Chinese culture. The ancients practiced self massage every day to help with health and life preservation. Archeologists, have found references to massage treatment for illnesses written in jiaguwen (this is the earliest extant form of writing in China) These inscriptions where found on bones and tortoise shells used in divination practice, dating back to as early as the Shang Dynasty (16th-11th centuries BC). During the excavation of the Ma Wang Dui tomb (dated 168 BC) in the Hunan Province, numerous medical texts on silk scrolls and bamboo strips were unearthed. Many of these including Illustrated Health Exercises and Health Preservation Formulas, contain references to anmo/massage, gymnastics and breathing exercises. The Huangdi Nei Jing (Yellow Emperors Inner Classic, dating 200 BC is the earliest surviving canonical text of traditional Chinese medicine. In this is referenced 30 different chapters related to massage. So as you can see massage was an important practice in China to help with health and longevity.
