Massah and Meribah The 16th Sunday after Pentecost, A, Green Exodus 17:1-7, Psalm 78:1-4, 12-16, Philippians 2:1-13, Matthew 21:23-32 “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God at work within you, enabling you both to will and work for her/his good pleasure.” Philippians2:12c-13 God’s acceptance of us Is a given! The question remains How do we say thanks? Embarking on this journey into sainthood, Discovering that road bumpy, And no theological GPS as our guide, Listening to the words from the past, Listening to the words of today, Trembling as we live into new revelastions (Oft quite different from the words of the past, I.E. slavery/race, women’s nothingness designs, GLBTQ, All noted as worthy of grace, Even though denied this given, By the voices of yesterday, All too often affirmed today) And here we are, Too often bound by our ancestors, Too often disregarding our ancestors, Our path not blazed Nor paved, Simply wandering about Sipping the water flowing from a rock We say thanks by sipping the water And carrying a cup thereof To an enemy Or one denied access to the fountain; Miss Jane comes to mind* “…‘Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.’ … Moses called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites and tested the LORD, saying, ‘Is the LORD among us or not’” Exodus 17:6b, 7 Jim Wilson *From the Movie, “The Autobiography Miss Jane Pittman” 1974
