Massey tops World military golf event Riffa – Directorate of Information and Moral Guidance: J Massey of the US took an early lead in the Eighth World Military Golf Championship, being held in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The American golfer put on a superb show at Montgomerie’s Royal Golf Club Course amidst fierce competition from 81 golfers from 16 countries, including Uganda, Thailand, Botswana, Canada, Germany, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Estonia, France, Latvia, Netherlands, Pakistan, Spain and hosts Bahrain. Massey has 140 points in total to his credit, and is being followed by Germany’s S Kannler (142 points) in second place, while J Cave (145) is third. Bahrain’s Abdulla Al Hakam, with 146 gross, is in fourth place. He is being followed by American pair of K Wesolowski (148) and S Mims (148) who are fifth and sixth, respectively. Another Bahraini golfer Hamad Al Afnan is presently holding seventh place with 149 points. Behind him is Canada’s C Lowdon (149) in eighth position, ninth-placer Mohammed Al Nuaimi (151) of Bahrain and 10th Nasser Yaqoub (151), also of Bahrain. The results gave the US a well-deserved overall lead in the team section with 581 points, edging Bahrain by 16 points. The US squad also includes K Nichols and W Boyd. Abdulla Al Hakam is battling side by side with young Bahraini golfer and son Sultan Al Hakam, as well as teammates Saqer Al Noaimi, Mohammed Al Noaimi, Nasser Yaqob and Hamad Al Afnan. Germany’s T Weihe, N Nucken, S Kannler, T Zagrav, R Jobski and F Gabe climbed up to third place with 606 points, followed by The team of C Lowdon, W O’Donnell, T Cameron, S Swansburg, J Gossen and T Stuckless of Canada who are fourth on countback. Pakistan (615) are fifth, followed by sixth Spain (622), seventh Holland (633), eighth Thailand (636), ninth South Africa (642) and 10th France (696). Namibia (687), Botswana (741), Uganda (752) and Estonia (785) hold positions from 11th to 14th. Meanwhile, Linda Jeffery leads the women’s section with 146 points. She is being followed by Namakula Flavia of Uganda (151) and American Nicole Johnson (154) who are respectively second and third. K Watts of South Africa (165) is fourth and Germany’s Karin Engelmann (174) is fifth. In overall, the US women tops the team standing with 300 points, 36 points ahead of second-placers Uganda and 40 on top of third South Africa. Germany (349) are fourth, followed by fifth Thailand (375), sixth Canada (381) and seventh Estonia (525). Action continues today (November 18), the third and penultimate day of the championship, while the curtain falls down on the event tomorrow with the finals and the prize-giving ceremony. It’s being held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who deputized BDF Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa to announce the event open. “It gives me great pleasure and privilege to be here with you to represent His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Supreme Commander and American Nicole Johnson (154) who are respectively second and third. K Watts of South Africa (165) is fourth and Germany’s Karin Engelmann (174) is fifth.
