Massive landslide hits river near Nepal capital !!! Seven districts in the eastern side of the country are at the risk of being affected by the massive landslide at Mankha VDC in Sindhupalchowk district which blocked the Sunkoshi River, triggering widespread panic amongst the people residing nearby the incident site. At least eight persons have been killed when a massive landslide blocked Sunkoshi River at Mankha VDC in Sindhupalchowk district on the wee hours of Saturday morning. The death toll, however, is expected to rise as many are feared to have gone missing in the landslide.Police have said that as many as 73 VDCs of the seven districts could be affected if the water pool blocked by the landslide bursts abruptly. The locals of the areas likely to be affected by the landslide have been taken to safer places while the security personnel and the local administration have also been urging the public to remain cautious. Keeping in mind the lurking danger, all the 56 sluice gates of Koshi barrage have been now opened. DIG Nawaraj Silwal said that districts like Okhaldhunga, Udayapur, Bhojpur, Khotang, Dhankuta, Sunsari and Saptari might be affected if the blocked water pool resulting from the landslide bursts abruptly. The landslide which occurred at around 2 am this morning has blocked the Sunkoshi River stopping the water flow and forming a large pool in the area. Meanwhile, police have relocated 225 families, residing on the banks of Sunkoshi River across several districts, to safer places. 100 families from Okhaldhunga, 50 from Udayapur, 45 from Sunsari, 20 from Bhojpur and 10 families from Saptari have been relocated to safer places, police informed.
