Mastantuono & Coffee has posted previously on our concern over the growing use of heroin, particularly among young people in our State. We find ourselves increasingly working with parents and their kids on cases such as possession of heroin, distribution of heroin, and causing death/homicide for providing heroin to a user who overdoses (so-called Len Bias prosecution). From this weeks MKE paper, the following developments: This month, heroin summits will be held in Waukesha and Ozaukee counties. Although planned separately, both aim to bring together parents, law enforcement, business leaders, treatment providers and others to develop a strategy to address what many describe as a growing epidemic. Across the state, heroin and opiate abuse is plaguing communities of every size. Last year in Milwaukee County, there were more deaths tied to opiate overdoses than there were homicides. The state Department of Justice says its the No. 1 concern for local law enforcement and has rolled out a massive public awareness campaign called The Fly Effect. A state committee recently sent three bills promoted by a lawmaker whose daughter is a heroin addict to the Assembly. Read more in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story:
