Master Mohammad Reza Lotfi (7January 1947-2 May 2014) has passed away. He was a legendary tar and setar virtuoso who defined an entire generation of renewed familiarity with classical Persian music. His collaboration with Master Mohammad Reza Shajarian reached its critical zenith during the Iranian revolution of 1977-1979, with their public performances now a definitive moment of those historic years. Here I post a legendary performance of Masters Lotfi (tar), Shajarian (vocal), and Naser Farhangfar (tonbak)--at Shiraz Art Festival in 1975 --performing a particularly tasking Radif Rast Panjgah--on Hafezs tomb (Hafeziyeh)--towards the end of his life a nasty political rift had caused some unfortunate exchanges between the two masters--but now all that remains is the grace, beauty, and genius of their music--May he rest in peace!
