Master of the Musical Spoons. Alan was gregarious, bold & outgoing. In January, 1967 we spontaneously decided to go to Montreal for the weekend. Neither of us had been there before, we didnt even have a map and had no idea what we would find there but I figured you dont have to worry when youre with Strell - you know he would start talking to people and youd find a place to crash at the very least. A lot of crazy stuff happened that weekend but I just want to relate the spoons part of the story. Unexpectedly we found that The Mothers of Invention were playing Montreal that night at a small club called the New Penelope. During intermission Alan met Jimmy Carl Black, the groups drummer, and Alan demonstrated his spoon playing for him in hopes of actually getting to perform on stage with The Mothers. Black seemed to be genuinely impressed but Zappa wouldnt go for it. Another time I was with Alan when he played spoons with Steve Weber of The Holy Modal Rounders.
