Master opens hearing in wage increase lawsuit LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A lawyer challenging an attempt to raise the minimum wage in Arkansas says state officials shouldnt have cleared the question for next months ballot. Former Court of Appeals Judge John B. Robbins opened a hearing Thursday on whether voters should consider raising the minimum wage from $6.25 to $8.50 per hour by 2017. The state Supreme Court wants his report by Oct. 10. Little Rock businessman Jackson T. Stephens Jr. is challenging the validity of the signatures submitted to put the measure on the Nov. 4 ballot. Stephens lawyer, David Sterling, said several documents turned in for validation were illegible. He said a sloppy process doomed the effort. Opponents said the state has the right to exercise its own discretion in determining whether documents can be read. Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
