Masters and Doctoral Fellowships in ‘Indian capital and labour in Africa’ Centre for Indian Studies in Africa (CISA), Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand The Centre for Indian Studies in Africa (established in 2010) announces upto four one-year Masters Fellowships and one three-year PhD Fellowship funded by the Government of India’s Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs. Candidates will have to apply and meet the requirements for admission to a relevant discipline in the School of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities where they will pursue research-based degrees on the broad theme of ‘the migration of labour and capital from India to Africa and, emerging notions of global responsibility.’ Research proposals might be on a range of topics concerning movements of labour and capital, work regimes, recompositions of caste and community, the political economy and politics of land and resources, trajectories of Indian business, or finance capital in various parts of Africa, but with a contemporary focus that connects Indian capital and labour to African research sites. The MA and PhD Fellowships will commence from January 2015 as per the University calendar and will be of the value of R 120,000 for the MA and R 150,000, R 165,000 and R171,500 over three years for the PhD. MA candidates should have a first class Honours degree or equivalent in the Social Sciences (for instance, in History, Anthropology, Sociology, Politics, Development Studies, and related fields), and PhD candidates should have a strong Masters degree in their chosen field. Applicants for both the MA and PhD Fellowships should send their CVs; a covering letter stating how their training intersects with the interests of research project on ‘Indian capital and labour in Africa’ at CISA; and three references. Applicants for the PhD Fellowship should include all these, and also a preliminary research proposal. Candidates must apply to the University of the Witwatersrand for admission and scholarships will be given after selections from the pool of those who have gained admission. It is the candidates responsibility to apply to the discipline/department of their choice.
