Match 24: European Cup Semifinal April 13, 1966: Real Madrid (2nd) vs Internazionale (3rd) The Setting: The great Miguel Munoz had won the European Cup as a player, but only once as a coach. He managed Real Madrid for 14 years, including the 5-year period before the 65-66 season. His Real Madrid had one the La Liga title every single year from 1961 to 1965, even adding a rare Copa del Rey to the tally. He had even reached two European Cup finals, losing out to Benfica in 1962 and to Internationale in 1964. That Inter was aiming to take over European Football at the time, coached by the great Helenio Herrera, the Argentinian who had coached FC Barcelona, eliminating Real Madrid for the very first time in 1960 (Match 30 of this series). Inter had won the Serie A in 1963 and 1965, and most importantly, they had won the last two European Cups and were looking for the first three-time-in-a-row win since Real Madrids run in the 50s. So this would make for a great semifinal, two great coaches and two great teams. The Lineups: Real: Betancort, Felipe, Pirri, Pachin, Sanchís, Grosso, Zoco, Amaro, Gento, Serena, Velázquez Inter: Sarti, Burgnich, Facchetti, Guarneri, Landini, Picchi, Bedin, Jair, Mazzola, Peiró, Suárez The Match: 120,000 people stormed the Santiago Bernabeu in the hope of a great match. They got a good won and went away happy, since Real scored early with Pirri and no one else was able to score at the night. The 1-0 victory was a good result, and when Amancio scored in the San Siro, Inter were basically eliminated, even managing the equalizer late in that match. In Short: Real Madrid went on to win their sixth European Cup, in the hopes of moving back to the top in the hierarchy. But it was not to be, and this was their last title for over 30 years. Inter were also never to be seen again, and their third title came only three years ago.
