Match Brief: #35/10 Aug: Marine Sunday Emerged Victorious In The Sunday Derby We have only one drawn match so far in this season and that was against Sunday FC in January. And unlike past matches against them in previous years where we would come off as convincing winners, this years 2 matches (including todays) have demonstrated a much keener affair between both sides. Simon hobbled off the pitch after barely 10 minutes into the match. His absence and a far-too-advanced Weng Khong left a big gap in the midfield which Sunday FC capitalised on it and bossed us around. Despite them having a larger share of the possession, we were the ones carving out more scoring opportunities before they struck their opening goal. Kian Hwa over committed to close down their playmaking captain, Fabian, who side-stepped KH easily and left him dead in his strides before squaring the ball to his striker who had the world of time to size up our goal from outside the box. His fierce cannon beat Brandon with ease. 0-1 down, we continued to create chances but either wasting them or were denied by SFCs keeper. Our best chance of the 1st half came from the right - Woons low square pass into the box was dummied by Teck Wah for Mike to take a snap shot at goal but SFCs keeper again denied us as he brilliantly palmed the ball out for a corner. Weng Khong, for all his negligence in providing cover in the midfield, made good for his far-too-advanced forays. Kian Hwa robbed SFCs right-back of the ball in the penalty box and it fell kindly into the path of Weng Khong. WK turned and shot low, finally beating their custodian for our equaliser. 1-1. The parity was short-lived. Teck Wah needlessly gave away the possession to SFC in midfield and they swiftly set up a counter-attack. Their nippy striker, by his sheer speed, evaded the challenges from Kok Hock and Leo in the box and then turned to set up the goal for his striker partner. 1-2 at the break. A couple of tactical changes - Weng Kwan moving into the central defence and Simon and Kamar pairing in the central midfield - plugged the big hole in the middle of the park in the 2nd half. We equalized shortly after the resumption of the match. Woon floated a delightful ball into the box which saw Mike challenging their keeper and defender for it. Their keeper failed to deal with the cross and Mike benefitted from his fumble and placed the ball into the open goal, 2-2. Teck Chye shaked off his lethargy in the 1st half and scored 2 clinical goals, both assisted by Kian Hwa. First, KH swiftly passed the ball down the left and into the box for the overlapping Teck Chye, who, without breaking his strides, beat the advancing keeper from a tight angle. 3-2. KH then caught their right-back napping by getting to the ball in the middle of the park ahead of the right-back and quickly passed the ball forward for Teck Chye, the latter coolly beat their burly custodian with another low shot. 2-4. Our 5th goal came in controversial fashion. We benefitted from the referees failure to spot Weng Khong in an offside position on the right. Weng Khong then did the right thing to continue with the play and sent in a high cross into the box. Teck Wah just stood at the far post and gently nodded the ball past SFCs custodian, much to the disgust and disbelief of SFC players. 2-5. But our kind-hearted Brandon, who straddles a very fine line between being brilliant and catastrophic, then decided to play the part of a sweet angel by gifting them their 3rd goal...perhaps to appease them. How did he let a weak and innocuous low shot slip under his body whereas he could stop those stiff shots with authoritative confidence....we need a top-notch psychologist to study his mental state to find out :). Final score: 5-3
