Match: Div 1 - Porirua Blue vs Valley Venue: Onepoto Playing conditions: Overcast then sunny, soft patches near stream and slight breezes, no rain and mild temperature Result: 0-1HT, 2-3FT Cautions: Porirua Blue - Damon Shore, 9 for unsporting conduct towards opposition, 1 yellow card Porirua Blue - Barry Macdonald, keeper for dissent, 1 yellow card Valley turned up in magpies colours and ready to rumble against Porirua Blue.Valley kicked off the game and worked hard to do a passing game and it looked good. Soon, Valleys players found space and time to press forward with numbers and put Porirua Blue under stress. Porirua Blues defense stood strong and kept the Valleys forays empty handed. The youth and speed of Valley suddenly pumped ball forward to empty space on the left area of the pitch and Matt Geach, no. 10, controlled the ball and sped past the oppositions defense and took a nice shot with his left foot and nailed the colour on the mast on the 21st min. There were chances when bobbling balls over the head of Porirua Blues defense and Valleys attacking efforts were thwarted by advancing keeper of Porirua Blue and lack of luck. Porirua Blue stayed calm and fought hard and in turn put the Valleys keeper under severe pressure. There were stages in the first half where Porirua United passed the ball and found space in the attacking third. Game and atmosphere were all sweet so far and Valley went into half time break with a narrow 1-0 advantage. Valley players wanted the game to finish well and players were hungry for more. Valley players attacked well and pack-hunted in the final third. Valley, like its colour, flew around like magpies, intercepted passes and poached balls from Porirua Blues and quickly moved the ball wide and forward amidst supportive rallying cries from teammates. Being a bigger and physically stronger team, Porirua Blues players used these comparative strengths to advantage. But the Laws of the Game demand that charging at an opponent to be dealt with appropriately. A Porirua Blues player, Damon Shore, no. 9, charged at an opponent, got up and instead of walking away, he decided to push a much smaller opponent backwards with both hands and this unsporting conduct earned him a yellow card on the 59th min. The keeper of Porirua Blue always had something to say and perhaps too much to say in the game. He was warned. After a free kick, and amidst all the short passes and ball was pingponging around in Porirua Blues penalty area and instead of playing to the whistle, Porirua Blues players appealed for offside but Valley players played the game. A desperate attempt to clear the ball instead ending up as an OG by a Porirua Blues player on the 60th min. The bad temperament of the Porirua Blues keeper came to the surface and mouthed away to the boiling point and swore at the referee. Barry Macdonald, keeper of Porirua Blue, copped a yellow card for dissent on the 61st min and he was lucky to stay on the pitch. Undeterred, Porirua Blue gathered the troops and soldiered on. Ball was delivered to Porirua Blues Graeme Essel and he was dancing around in the penalty area and was fouled. Matt Loynes, no. 14 of Poirua Blue stepped up for the spot kick and slotted the ball in Valleys net on the 67th min. A contrast of team discipline and team-play emerged. The younger and fitter players from Valley started to come to the fore just as the sunrays emerged through the overcast sky. Barely two minutes later, Valley was again running, passing the ball and was pressing forward unrelentlessly with some near misses. Matt Geach, no. 10 of Valley, scored his brace on the 70th min. Not to be outdone, Mike Loynes, no. 14 of Porirua Blue, scored his brace on the 75th min. Despite more attack plays and defense from both teams, neither team was able to add another goal before the final whistle sounded. Match ended with a 3-2 win to the visiting Valley team.
