Match Report - 9th November 2014 Group A Call of Guti 2 v 3 Charing FC (Reed 2; Fasoli, Raggett, Carpenter) Guti faced Charing in the first cup game of group A. Charing started the better if the two sides and Fasoli slotted home after the keeper blocked his first effort. Charing continue to dominate the play and were creating plenty if chances. The danger of dominating play without the cushion of goals us being caught on the counter, which Charing found to their disadvantage as Martin Reed found an equaliser. Charing stepped up a gear and controlled possession and found the net with a long range effort from Raggett. Charing tried to increase their advantage but the moist conditions meant their efforts in the final third went unrewarding fir the remainder if the first half. The second half continued as the first ended- Charing dominating possession but failing to score from their chances, with Raggett and Steel failing to convert their efforts. Guti continued to counter well however, and Reed doubled his tally with a well struck shot. With the game drawing to a close, Steele played Scott Carpenter through to secure the points for Charing, who still have not lost a game since joining the league. Almighty Average 5 v 1 Athletico Kebab (Andrews, Branchett, Jackson, Bowry, Anderson; Neaves) Athletico Kebab faced Almighty Average in a game which Kebab needed to win to give them any hope of qualifying for the Champions League. Athletico had a strong goal difference, so with Charing winning their earlier game, a win would give them a chance of qualifying has the highest second placed team. It was Almighty though who had the great chances and dominated the first half with Athleticos chances limited on the counter attack. Midway through the half the ball was slid through to Josh Andrews, and he was able to dance round 3 defenders before smashing home to deservedly put Almighty in front - giving Almighty a 1-0 lead at the break. In the second half, Almighty continued to press and it was another fine team move that split open the champions for the second time, with a back heel from Billy Curtis into the path of Simon Branchett who curled the ball home. Athletico looked for a swift response and almost got it, when Ryan Hollingsbee struck a fine effort which was saved brilliantly by Adam Cabbage. With Athletico pressing, Almighty added a third, again in fine style, with Andrews chipping to the far post before captain Dan Jackson volleyed home brilliantly into the top corner. Athletico did pull a goal back, with league top goalscorer Matt Neaves firing home superbly. But before Athletico could find their way back, Simon (Snowy) Bowry fired home into the far corner and Dan Anderson fired home late on to give Almighty a superb 5-1 win. Group B Moves Like Dejagah 3 v 2 Team Heskey (Bond 2, Meehan; Sharpe) In our first game if the evening, recently promoted Dejagah faced a resurgent team Heskey. Both sides had won their previous cup fixtures, meaning both were looking for a win to secure playing in the champions league. Heskey took first kick off and lost the ball to Bond of Dejagah. James Bond played the ball to James Meehan, who slotted the ball in. Team Heskey rallied and equalised almost immediately through Brad Sharpe. Heskey perked up and controlled the remainder of the half, and scored their second of the night through a shin rolled shot from stand in captain Sharpe once again . After the half Dejagah kept the ball well and created the better chances. Midway through the half, prolific Bond of Dejagah equalised with a well placed shot. With the game delicately poised, both teams pressed for a winner. Bond doubled his tally of the evening with a well worked corner, giving Dejagah a well deserved lead with minutes to go. Heskey were looking for an equaliser and almost found it but Sharpe pulled his shot wide, giving Dejagah a clean sweep in the cup group. Team Melt 0 v 4 Lolzors (Harper, Slingsby 3) Lolzors finished their group stage campaign on a high, beating Team Melt 4-0. Both sides lost their opening games but wanted to finish on a high and it was Lolzors who started much the better and they raced in to a 2-0 lead with Ashley Slingsby grabbing a brace, returning to goalscoring form. Team Melt struggled to find their way after that shock start and with the lively Ross Antrum trying to find a response from his side - but Lolzors took the 2-0 lead at the break. In the second half, it was much the same with Lolzors dominating and with Melt struggling to find their way, Lolzors took advantage with Ben Creed playing in Sion Harper who fired home and Slingsby completed his hattrick late on to secure a fine 4-0 win. Group C Ashford No-Stars 1 v 2 NotInMyMums Forest (Burch; Harvey, Hurst) NotInMyMums Forest grabbed a last minute winner over Ashford No-Stars to book their place in the Champions League Semi-Finals, winning 2-1 on the night. Both sides had won their respective fixtures meaning the winner would go through, even a draw may be good enough for both sides to progress. Forest started the game strongly with No-Stars keeper atom Russell (facing his former side) making several fine saves to deny Forest an opener, and the reliable defensive pairing of Shane Robinson and Matt Edwards defending well. It was actually No-Stars who would open the scoring, with Carl Hamilton playing in Mark Burch and he fired the Division One side in front - giving No-Stars the shock lead at the break. In the second half, Forest went up a gear and further saves from Tom Russell kept the No-Stars lead intact. But as is the way, the defence could not hold strong and Tom Harvey did well before firing low into the corner. Both sides pushed for a winner, with neither taking notice of the likelihood that they were both through and right at the death, Jamie Hurst was the Forest hero as he fired home an unstoppable left foot drive into the bottom corner ensuring Forest would go through, leaving No-Stars having to wait until later on to see if they progressed as highest second placed team. Queens Head 2 v 3 Rockaway United (Harwood, ODonoghue; Harper, Hopkins (Pen), French) Queens Head and Rockaway United battled for third place tonight with both sides losing their opening games. Both sides have struggled in the cup but both were looking to finish on a high and it was Rockaway who looked the livelier in the early stages and after good build up play by United, Sion Harper was able to power home to give them a deserved lead. This seemed to spark Queens into life and Matt ODonoghue and Terry Harwood both went close to finding an equaliser but United held firm and retained their lead at the break. In the second half, Queens went up a gear and Terry Harwood (spurred on by his other sprint up field) fired home brilliantly to put Queens level. Level terms did not last long however when United were awarded a penalty and up stepped Steve Hopkins who powered home. But back came Queens and Matt ODonoghue fired home brilliantly from range to draw his side level yet again. With the game locked, both sides pressed to win but were nervy in their approach, meaning both sides were looking to counter each other. As Rockaway surged forward, a well struck shot from George French struck the post and nestled in the corner to give Rockaway their first win against a queens side. Team of the Week:- Goalkeeper Tom Russell (Ashford No-Stars) Made several fine saves to deny Forest, until the very last minute. Fine game. Defender Sion Harper Brilliant for Rockaway, scoring and assisting another in their fine 3-2 win over Queens Head. Defender Josh Andrews (Almighty Average) Scored a fine solo effort and assisted the superb Dan Jackson effort. Midfield/Attack Ben Creed (Lolzors) Was refereed by several as had a fine game assisting chances and dominating the midfield. Midfield/Attack James Bond (Moves Like Dejagah) Scored a fine brace in his side in 3-2 win over Team Heskey. Striker Ashley Slingsby (Lolzors) Scored a hattrick for his side in their 4-0 win over Team Melt. Credit also to Dan Jackson of Almighty Average and Jamie Hurst of NotInMyMums Forest who both also had fine games. Goal of the Week:- Dan Jackson (Almighty Average v Athletico Kebab) Plenty to choose from, from one game alone and that was the Almighty Average v Athletico Kebab, with Almighty putting a real show on. Josh Andrews and Simon Branchett both scored fine efforts (described above) but it was their captain Dan Jackson who nicked it. Andrews played in a fine cross to the far post where Jackson volleyed home brilliantly into the opposite corner - one of the best goals at Ball Lane so far. Save of the Week:- Adam Cabbage (Almighty Average v Athletico Kebab) Despite the 5-1 scoreline, still had plenty to do and had to pull off a full length save to deny a fine long range effort from Ryan Hollingsbee.
