Match Report 18/10/14 Ashley Down Old Boys (25) v BAC (11) Following last weeks disappointing display against local rivals Bishopston it was important that Ashley Down bounced back and with a side showing several changes from the previous week Ashley Down kicked off at Lockleaze playing up the slope against a stiff breeze. BAC had the best of the first few minutes, using the elements to push them into the Ashley Down half but were unable to make anything of this early territorial advantage. After 15 minutes it was Ashley Down who broke the deadlock with a well worked training field move that saw stand in captain James Hall scoring a try in the corner to put them into a 5 point lead. Ashley Down were guilty of conceding too many penalties which allowed BAC to easily use the conditions to put the ball back into the home teams half and were eventually awarded with a penalty within kicking range that enabled them to reduced the arrears to 5 – 3. Neither side were able to dominate and the half ended with no further change to the scoreline. Ashley Down, now playing with the elements in their favour, started off the second half with much more enthusiasm and it wasn’t long before Pat Creaven snr found himself on the end of some slick handling to force his was over in the corner to extend the lead by another 5 points. Almost directly from the restart Ashley Down conceded a penalty and BAC converted to reduce the lead again. However a few minutes later Pat Creaven jnr restored the lead with a well struck penalty from 40m. Ashley Down were now beginning to dominate and extended the lead further halfway through the half when the back row broke down the blind-side following a strike against the head and scrum half Sam Gervais went over in the corner for another unconverted try to make the score 18 -6. Ashley Down were now looking more confident and following several phases of play second row Kevin Shipway was too strong for the opposition and scored the bonus point try and Pat Creavens conversion extended the lead to 25-6 and the game looked safe. With 10 minutes left BAC found themselves exerting real pressure on the home teams line for the first time in the match and although several waves of attack were repelled they eventually scored a try wide out on the right to take the score to 25 – 11. In the last few minutes BAC missed another penalty attempt and Pat Creaven was unfortunate not to extend the home sides lead when his penalty attempt rebounded off the post. In the end a good result for Ashley Down who will take some confidence into the rest of the season. Flanker , Joe Coghlan, was man of the match for a non stop effort both at the breakdown and in open play. Outside half, James Doody had a solid game before leaving the field with an ankle injury and young Pat Creaven was always a threat in the centre and then at 10.
