Match Report: AFC Wallasey Town V FC Rearguard, TRFC Supporters team. Committed as ever, AFC Wallasey Town management secured the nets and got down to Wallacre for 4:30 to claim a pitch ahead of the 6:30 kick off. Good job really because that was just enough time for them to put the posts together. FC Rearguard players gradually arrived and seemed to have one of the few qualities that the Wallasey Town squad dont have in abundance - youth. Wallasey welcomed debutant Will Armstrong to the side and drafted in loan signing Darren Pritchard at the last minute to make a squad of 12, but sadly there was no goalkeeper. Clubman Dave Sullivan, earmarked for a midfield role for the match was the only one to offer his services and a quick tactical re-shuffle enabled the game to commence on time. Wallasey started the game well, with wingers Lee Davey and Ben Speed causing Rearguard all sorts of problems. Matty Morris, (un)fresh from his exploits in the Mediterranean and Jay Chesterman battled in the centre of the park and took control of the game with Morris winning every 50/50 and Chesterman driving forward with several runs. With the Rearguard defence screaming for every foul and throw in, Wallasey focused on making the breakthrough. After a spell of good pressure Matty Morris swung a corner into the near post where Dan Trevithick was positioned to slot home the opening goal, during the discussion on the way back to the halfway line, Trevithick confessed to not touching it, crediting the goal to the corner taker. 1-0 Wallasey ! Rearguard, with some decent players, began to get into the game and Sullivan was required to command his area to collect intelligent throughballs. As ever though, the aerial battle was won by Mark Cullimore and his new defensive partner Will Armstrong matched his physical presence, sweeping up any loose balls and winning key tackles. The one time a player did get past Armstrong, he was swept up too! As Matty Morris placed the ball down for a second corner, the fans anticipated maybe another flukey goal, but this time it was a fine hanging delivery to the far post and Mark Cullimore leapt to power home a headed goal to make it 2-0 Wallasey ! By now Wallasey were linking up all over the pitch and a great run from left back Mike Cunningham saw the ball delivered to Dan Trevithick and he fed the ball through the defenders back into Cunninghams path whod continued his run, the first time shot was saved by the goalkeeper. At the other end some excellent skill on the left wing resulted in the ball being squared into the box were a Rearguard player calmly slotted home , 2-1 Wallasey. HT As veteran strikers Steve Davey and Dan Trevithick debated who was most in need of a lie down, it was decided that if Davey lay down with his back injury, he might not get up - so Darren Pritchard replaced the impressive Trevithick. The key moment of the second half belonged to Pritchard who was found by Chesterman and he then executed a lovely chip over the advancing keeper. The ref was also impressed and blew for the goal as the ball went towards the line. Three Rearguard defenders had got back and claimed the ball hadnt gone in, but as they protested - the Wallasey players were already waiting for the kick off. 3-1 Wallasey! Rearguard did look decent going forward in the second half, but couldnt get past Sullivan. The one time he was breached Adam Hanaghan got back well to head the ball off the line. In the last 10/15 minutes of the game Wallasey looked the side more likely to score with them finding acres of space down the right flank with Adam Hanaghan and Ben Speed seeing plenty of the ball. The last notable moment came from a great run by Pritchard who pulled the ball back to Steve Davey whos goal bound shot was well deflected over the goal by a Rearguard defender. The ref then blew up suspiciously early and for the last ten minutes we watched the game on the next pitch and admired the injury volcano growing on Will Armstrongs foot..After several opinions varying from its definitely broken to its only a bruise the agreed verdict was itll hurt in the morning. Not the greatest game of this pre-season but another victory and another step closer to being fully prepared for the season opener, just two weeks away. Onwards and Upwards AFC Wallasey Town x
