Match Report: On a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon, ripe for flowing rugby, Media ran riot over a weak Old Haileyburians team in their first match back after the looong Christmas lull. (Our opposition was made even weaker due to the fact that they only had 14 men, even though I don’t quite understand why they didn’t just bump up one of their 2nd team players.. Anyway, I digress!) After a decent train journey to Le Stadium Esher (Well, it was quite fancy compared to Battersea Park wasn’t it?) Mr Crowder wasted little time in getting Media on the scoreboard with a typical Big Benny Bash over the tryline. This epic start was continued with further trys from Aidan and the Silver Fox George, but this is when things got a little wobbly and not for the first time this season.. One of our biggest flaws is underestimating the 15 men stood facing us and taking them a little too lightly. We could have quite easily nilled this match if it wasn’t for a few silly mistakes and the odd lapse of concentration, but we all know we are better than that and need to show it if we are going to be in the Top 2 come April. Because if we don’t take Old Caterhamians and Guildfordians seriously in the return matches, to quote my favourite of the saga, Aliens.. “GAME OVER MAN!!!” Right, back to business.. So we actually ended up conceding 4 trys and 3 conversions throughout both halves which could and should have been avoided, but due to a few more cheeky 5 pointers from Andre (2) and Cookie, we went in at half time looking rather comfortable and good for the win. HALF TIME The second half started much the same with us scoring a few trys and then the opposition getting a daft one back. Super Sub Sammy Cullis smashed in a superb brace before Barnesy broke the line to score for about the forty first match running (Your boring mate! :p Get a new hobby pal! Haha!). I would have said that the try of the day probably had to go to Greeny for his cheeky little Ieuan Evans-esq effort over the top, as words can’t describe just how difficult it is to both attempt the chip and actually make the catch, however it was bettered by only one.. With only twenty five minutes to go and the clock rapidly running down, Nick Sunnick FINALLY came on off the bench to make an impact and boy did he leave his mark.. Time was ticking away at the speed of light when he found himself on the outside with only Jake ‘The Snake’ Goodman in support, as graceful as Jake is, he knew that there was only one man for the job and that man, was him.. With a silky spin back inside that Jason Robinson would have been proud of, Sunnick composed himself before, as if in slow motion, steadying himself for the 30 yard drop goal echoing Jonny Wilkinson back in 2003. OF COURSE IT SAILED OVER AND MADE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE TO THE FINAL SCORE!!!!!!!!! I DID NOT AND I EMPHASISE, DID NOT GRUBBER KICK THE BALL HOPELESSLY LONG FOR AN UTTERLY POINTLESS AND WASTEFUL 22 DROP OUT WHEN I SHOULD HAVE JUST DRAWN THE MAN BEFORE SENSIBLY POPPING THE BALL OUT TO JAKE TO GO OVER IN THE CORNER, NICE AND EASY!!!!!!! FINAL SCORE: 70 – 26 Man Of The Match: Jonny Downie for offering a different option at Scrum Half and having a great all rounder. (Justin, the ball is now in your court bruuu! Time to show us what you’ve got buddy!) Dick Of The Day 1: Old Haileyburians’ Full Back for not bothering to actually turn up.. True story. Dick Of The Day 2: London Media’s Hugh ‘Vagina’ Simpson for prioritising dragging his poor poor sweet lady to a sing-a-long of the hits from the great Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.. TRUE STORY. Anyone tells you any different and they are f**king liars! I did NOT void my stomach in front of both the first and second team.. NOT A TRUE STORY, AT ALL, IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM!!!!!!!!!!!! (P.S. I apologize now for any inaccuracies due to the fact that my bottom lip was partially covering my line of vision by about 5 or 10 minutes into the second half.)
