Match Report: Poulton Vics v AFC Wallasey Town, 30th November 2014 , Division Two On the back of two hard-fought wins, Wallasey arrived at Wallacre Park hopeful of making it three on the bounce against Poulton Vics. The players know the drill now, arrive early and prepare, and since the opening day on the same pitch where we conceded 4 early goals against Vineyard weve come a long way organisationally. Even before the pre-match team talk, keeper Jay OConnor was covered in mud, Willy Armstrong had organised our game of one touch which looks more professional every week and Adam Hanaghan had scored his 3 best ever goals - our warm ups are now on another level. In the changing rooms came the gaffers reminder of what a brilliant squad we have. Were really coming together and even with several players unavailable it was still a tough call to name a starting 11 from todays group and this is why midweek management meetings during the week are so important (where pound coins are given players names and put in formations around the pub table). I think whats unique about this squad though is the attitude from the players...those playing in different positions, those named sub, those coming off and even players unable to make it who text for updates/result are all team players who are a pleasure to work with and today was another example of that. Special mention to those that started sub today and those who came off, always encouraging the team - theres no individuals here. The game got underway (on a very heavy pitch that was quite boggy in the middle and needs a good haircut) and for the opening ten minutes it was all Poulton Vics. Jay OConnor was forced into a couple of very decent saves as Wallasey gradually started to get out of bed. Cant beat those Sunday Football Phrases. But when youve got two pacy forwards, youre only a quick counter attack away from a goal and thats precisely what happened. Sam Courtney collected the ball cut inside onto his left foot and placed the ball past the keeper and into the net ! 1-0 Town ! ... In Sunday Football this is where you shout Nil Nil to a teammate who looks excited about the goal and point to your head with an angry look to bring him back down to earth. Now what happened next was pretty much 80 minutes of bypassing midfield with long balls, to which the opposition would shout HOW IS HEEEEE?! and the ref would give offside. As such the beautiful game went out the window. This would sell zero copies on DVD but the main thing was just getting the result. Sadly with around 20 minutes left though it all went wrong. In a rare opportunity a Poulton player was allowed two bites of the cherry at the far post and finished to make it 1-1. In such a scrappy game there would be only a few clear cut chances and with 86 offside decisions every 5 minutes, it would be hard to even create them. Hanaghan and Courtney forced decent saves from the keeper when in on goal and it looked like a stalemate was on the cards. But the ever reliable Ben Speed seized his moment and when put through he flicked one past the keeper and it rolled home. Get in. 2-1 Wallasey. Poulton came back again and solid defending from the back four, including a brilliant challenge from Cullimore when a striker was about to pull the trigger when in one goal and he came from nowhere to slide it away. Every player put themselves on the line and gave everything to see the game out. If anything it looked more likely Wallasey would get another on the counter attack. Luckily the ref didnt base the injury time on stoppages for offsides otherwise wed still be there, and he blew for full time. 2-1 Town , three wins on the bounce. MOM. My stand in reporter gave it to Sam Courtney last week and Im not going to let that affect me, he wins it again. Took some very heavy challenges and picked himself up and went again, thats AFC Wallasey Town spirit. He scored and never stopped trying to create. Hes forming a lethal partnership with Ben Speed and long may that continue. See you next week, you brilliant people. FORZA WALLASEY!
