Match Report Vs Scotstown Rovers 12/10/2013 With Halliburton coming off the back of a decent run, then todays Scottish Cup 2nd Round tie would see the visitors arrive at Sheddocksley to meet Scotstown Rovers in confident mood. Confident, however not complacent, as at the same stage in last years national competition, Scotstown had comprehensively dealt with Halliburton, indeed blasting home 6 goals in the process. Could Halli gain some revenge this afternoon? Halli had a 15 man squad available to choose from and Manager Stuart Marlow went once again for the 4-5-1 set up. Sct Marlow was in goal, N.McDonald, Turner, Simpson & N.Duncan at the back. In midfield were S.Jaques, Wilson, R.Fulton, Webster & K.Jaques with Laing up top. In reserve were Andrews, Howieson, Hunter & Brown. Laing had failed to score in our last outing, something he was very keen to rectify this afternoon. The pitch at Sheddocksley was not great but overhead conditions were perfect. Almost straight from the kick off Scotstown posted their intentions pretty forcibly when a shocking challenge was thrown in on N.McDonald, the assailant received a yellow for his trouble. In 4 K.Jaques sent a neat ball down the line for Wilson who delivered a teasing cross, but no takers were on the end of it. The first half chance of the game was in 8 and it was the home side that passed it up. A header off a throw in was a relatively easy take for Halli keeper Sct Marlow and from that he launched a long ball forward which Laing snapped onto and lobbed the well advanced keeper 1-0. In 10 N.McDonald threw a ball down the line for Laing, who turned well and saw a good effort well saved by Davidson in the home goal. With 13 on the clock Halli skipper Simpson covered across well to block out an attack before N.Duncan did very well for the visitors sliding into challenge before releasing K.Jaques. It was predominantly Halliburton now and they came very close to a second in 18 Simpson up for a corner nodded down into the danger area to Laing, he got it to S. Jaques but the redhead fresh aired his effort, before slamming the loose ball into the keeper. Moments later however it was 0-2 a straight forward left wing corner and R.Fulton rose to power home a header. In 22 Wilson wildly slammed a half chance over the bar and instantly ripped off his shirt in anger. The homeside raced up field but Turner defended strongly and escorted the ball to safety. A right wing corner found R.Fulton again but this time he headed wide. More pressure from Halli and a superbly driven ball into the danger area from N.Duncan, the ball was half cleared and fell for Wilson who rifled a shot back off the bar. In dived Laing to pump a header into the net 0-3. A rare Scotstown attack then caused panic as the visiting Halli defence seemed to have lost the ball in the bright sunlight, a home player however fired his shot well wide. Laing completed his hat trick in 41 when he lobbed in another one, this time with his left foot from fully 30 yards off a neat ball through from Wilson 0-4. (H.T.0-4) Halli had to now keep at it and go for a big score, as it appeared likely more goals were in this game, if we worked hard. It was Scotstown infact, that blasted out of the traps but the ball in was collected by Sct Marlow in the Halli goal. He then picked out K.Jaques who set up brother S.Jaques with a free header inside the 6 yard box. Unfortunately he couldn’t convert. 5 minutes later and the brothers combined again with spectacular results. Ball in from the left and this time S.Jaques met it full on the volley and thundered home the 5th goal 0-5. At this point sub Brown was buzzing as he was handed the opportunity to show what he could do for the remaining 40 mins. As he briskly warmed up the thought suddenly dawned on him, that he had left his football top way back in the pavilion, so off he trotted to retrieve it,. Fearing the introduction of the sub Scottown tried their best to get back in it and Simmer drove a decent effort just over the top.. Halli’s Webster then sent through a great ball for S.Jaques but the keeper was off his line quickly to clear. On the hour Turner at the back for Halli broke up an attack moved forward and played in S.Jaques, he fed Laing who squared to Laing but O/S. In 61 it was six, Laing yet again one on one slotted it away 0-6. With the sub now well warmed up Brown & Hunter replaced R.Fulton & S.Jaques in 63 mins. In 65 Brown found Hunter, onto Laing squared to Wilson 0-7. The next sub saw keeper Andrews introduced for some much needed game time in place of regular Sct Marlow. In 69 K.Jaques delivered a magnificent crossfield ball for Hunter who won a throw in.Brown played a good ball forward to Hunter but it was cleared upfield. Turner quickly returned the favour and again Hunter collected, he found Laing but this time the prolific marksman was inches offside. The striker went nap in 75 after good hold up play by Wilson set him up to beat the keeper after running in on goal 0-8. Howieson joined the fray in place of Wilson before play commenced. Andrews did well to take a cross in off a right wing raid then had to look lively diving at the feet of an attacker seconds later. In 82 Brown was caught in possession, but Turner got there to play in Hunter, he rolled it to Laing who went round the keeper to score an incredible 6th and Halli’s 9th 0-9. Laing becoming the first ever Halli player in 37 seasons to score 6 in a game. Right on the final whistle Hunter had the chance to put us into double figures but the shell shocked keeper was having none of it and raced out to boot clear. (F.T.0-9). Job done then, Halli safely through to the next round which now opens up to the whole of Scotland. Not much can be said about today’s victory, given the level of opposition, still you can only beat what is put in front of you so well done to Halliburton for keeping up the pace for the full 90. A magnificent scoring display from Laing and also a great game from Turner at the back. For reasons obvious to everyone it has to be Andrew Sharp Shooter Laing that picks up this afternoons Halliburton Man of the match award. 21 goals so far this season is some going.
