Match Report – SCORCHERS vs EDGE Date: Sunday, 28 Sep 2014 Venue: Ballinger #2 Time: 11:45am Result: SCORCHERS (136/6 off 19.4) defeated EDGE (133/5 off 20) by 2 wickets with 1 ball to spare. **Scorchers Edge Out Kev Newbold’s Strengthened Squad in Thriller** The Edge would take on new division 1 contenders, the Scorchers, in a battle of mass talent. The Edge would bat first, with the Scorchers getting on top of them early. The Edge managed to maintain their wickets, however Lance and Leeroi struggled to find the boundary, thus, struggled to gain any momentum. Lance was victim of some ferocious and relentless bowling, as he managed 36 off 35 before being removed. Leeroi fought through the early stutter and managed to finish with a very respectable and important 52* off 30. Apart from Kev Newbold’s late order charge, no more heavy contributions were made as the Scorchers continued to tie down The Edge. Kev finished with 23 off 13 before he was undone, as The Scorchers looked to finish off their 20 efficiently. They managed to finish in style, restricting The Edge to 133/5 off 20. The pick of the bowlers was Steve Lourigan, who claimed 1/19 off 4. Glen Trebilco (1/28 off 4) and Brad Cumberland (1/24 off 4) picked up a wicket each, while Dave Fitchett remained wicket less, but bowled extremely well nonetheless to finish with 0/17 off 4. With 134 needed to win, it was vital for the top order to produce some scores, and produce they did. Against a strong bowling attack, Brad, Glen and Steve managed to add 96 between themselves in a superb display of top order batting. Brad managed 20 off 18 in a great knock which saw the big lad see off the new ball to make middle order batting easier. Glen Trebilco also managed to see off the new ball and then some as he posted 37 off 30. Steve Lourigan’s innings was vital, as he managed to up the ante just enough to keep Scorchers on track. Lourigan managed 39 off 26 in a superb display of batting. His departure however kept The Edge in the game as the match tightened. Cameos from Paul Watson (13 off 5) and Dave Fitchett (19* off 9) managed to get the Scorchers home with 1 ball spare. Dave’s innings was of the highest order, with the lower order batsmen clutching a win yet again for the Scorchers. The wickets were evenly shared amongst The Edge, with Oli Lane (1/11 off 2), Kev Newbold (1/14 off 3), Kev Shepperd (1/18 off 4), Jack White (1/21 off 2) and Leeroi (1/23 off 3) all grabbing 1 each.
