Match Report – SWANNIES vs SUNCOAST SUPERSTARS Date: Sunday, 21 Sep 2014 Venue: Ballinger #1 Time: 2:45pm Result: SUPERSTARS (215/4 off 20) defeated SWANNIES (96/2 off 15) by approx.. 100 runs. **Superstars Crush Grayless Swannies in Devastating Display** The Swannies were without star-man Ash Gray, however the eagerness to shake the tag of being a ‘1 man team’ was evident, as they were geared up and ready to go. For Paul Wilson’s superstars, a win seemed necessary, particularly with the strength and depth of the 8. The Superstars would bat first, much to the disappointment of Paul Wilson. The innings began terribly, with Chris Newbold removed 2nd ball for a duck, as Gunner picked up the prize wicket. Jamie Vibert and Matt Batley steadied after the early loss, as the Superstars looked to rebuild. Jamie’s energetic innings came to a close, when he skied a pull shot straight to the safest hands in the comp/world. Richard Mutch held the catch, as always, and the Swannies were right on top. Brad Beneke then fell the next ball, blasting one to that same man, Richard! D**dle as he’s better known (this page is PG rated, sorry folks) making no mistake, as the Superstars were left in a slight spot of bother. Charl Botes joined Matt, and the fun began! The pair didn’t bother too much about running, it was more a contest of who could hit the biggest six. Charl and Matt had the crowd on the edge of their seats, both in fear of being hit and in awe of the magnificent stroke play. Dayne ended up moving his car to avoid any more damage (Pete McCauley reference) as 6’s continued to rain down at Ballinger. Charl’s stay then came to a dramatic end, when D**dle held on to another catch, forcing Charl to depart for 24 off 10 as the Swannies continued to stay in the contest. With the game in the balance, Matt decided to go for broke and launch in to the attack. Matt continued to dominate the bowlers, scorching his way to a 17 ball 50, while Wayne settled in to his innings. Paul showed why he is considered the best off-side player in the comp, hammering effortless cover and off-drives to and over the rope as the Superstars continued to push towards 200. Wayne was also dynamic at the crease, flicking and punching the ball with ease. The pair put on quick and important runs to guide the Superstars beyond a par score. Paul managed to bring up his 50 off just 19 rocks, with the skipper showcasing his full array of strokes in a superb display of timing and placement. Wayne also managed to make his way to 50, bringing up the milestone in just 25 balls. Dave Fitchett finished off proceedings for the Superstars in combination with Wayne and Batley, with the left arm speedster scoring an unbeaten 18 off just 13. Matt returned, however only added 1 run to his score, to finish with 54* off 20. Superstars managed to post 215/4 despite the early trouble, leaving the Swannies with a mountain to climb. Lachie Gunner claimed 1/34 off 4, while Chandan picked up 2/37 off 4. Pete McCauley claimed the other wicket, taking 1/34 off his 4. With 216 needed to win, the Swannies would need a minor miracle, particularly against the most formidable bowling attack on the coast. Oli Lane and Peter McCauley were in charge of turning water in to wine as the pair looked to settle in against the pace and bounce offered from Dave Fitchett. The pair were steady in their stay, however boundaries were hard to come by, and they began to fall behind the rate. The Superstars were dynamic in the field and with the ball, offering nothing to the batsmen, as Oli and Pete continued to pursue the target. Pete played well for his 20, but on his 18th ball he was removed. Leeroi then came to the crease, after downing his 8th painkiller for the day. The weary-eyed Swanny didn’t seem to struggle against the pace, taking Charl for 17 off one over. The task at hand was too much, however Oli and Leeroi continued to fight in an honourable display of batting. Oli then fell for 31 off 27, to bring Ace Ventura to the crease. Leeroi continued to find the rope, whilst Ace looked to settle in, before some late afternoon showers ended play prematurely with 5 overs still remaining. At the 15 over mark, Swannies were 96/2, meaning the Superstars were comfortable winners. Despite the severe loss, Leeroi managed a commendable 40* off 25, while Ace finished with 5* off 5. Chris Newbold took 1/3 off 1, while Charl picked up the other wicket to finish with 1/28 off 4. Dave was at his devastating best, finishing with 0/10 off 3. Man of the Match: Matt Batley (SUPERSTARS) 54* off 20 & 0/15 off 2 Scorecard: lastmanstands.spawtz/SpawtzSkin/Fixtures/GameDetails.aspx?FixtureId=93122&LeagueId=1382&SeasonId=59&DivisionId=0 Author: LMS_Codey
