Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy Affects Children into Adolescence Maternal smoking during pregnancy has been known to affect the respiratory health of offspring through childhood but a recent study looked at effects persisting into adolescence. It found that adolescents as old as 14 who were born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy have an increased risk of decreased lung function, asthma and wheezing. Over 1,100 adolescents were studied in Australia. Maternal smoking during pregnancy occurred in 21% of the adolescent offspring. The results were published in a recent issue of the American Journal of Respiratory Critical Care Medicine.
