Maternal depression represents a major public health concern in the United States, impacting the lives of women, families, and communities. For this reason, providers and others who care for and work to improve the lives of mothers and children must take action to halt maternal depression before it can become a major problem for families. Early recognition of depression in mothers is a critical first step in this process, necessitating the development of mechanisms to reach women with depression who would not ordinarily seek help on their own. Based on the literature reviewed, we offer a number of recommendations.
