Maths/ Algebra Trick Riddle: The average age of 10 Members of a Committee is the same as it was 5 years ago, because an Old Member Mr.Ramachandran has been replaced by his Grandson Mr.Anbu. Find how much Younger is the new member Anbu to the Retired Old Member Ramachandran so that the Average Age of all the Members in the Committee remains the same after 5 yrs? Can you identify the number ? In short how much Older is the Grandfather than his Grandson? Think.... You can solve using Algebra... If you give up... Scroll Down... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Solution: Let the Sum of 9 member (total) = X the age of old member Mr.Ramachandran = R The 10 Member Committees Average Age before 5 yrs = (X + R) / 10. Let the age of the New Member Mr.Anbu = A after 5 yrs ; let R be replaced by A in the above equation so now Average after 5 yrs = ((X + 5 yrs x 10 members) + A) / 10 now (X+R)/10=(X+50+A)/10 After solving, R=A+50 i.e., R is 50 yrs older than A So Mr.Anbu is 50 Years Younger than his Grandfather Mr.Ramachandran and the average age of all the 10 members remain the same after replacing Ramachandran with his Grandson Anbu by Anbu Rangaswami
