E. Davies for $5,000 complete, at the same meeting the resignation of George H. Rief was presented, as his work as County Superintendent interfered with his being in attendance at meetings, and the resignation was accepted…. 1939 The flu has hit White Bear and cases appear every day in greater numbers. The schools are hard hit. Superintendent H. G. Christenson, Principal Melvin Voxland, M. H. Dunlap, and several other members of the faculty are ill with it. Not only these, but Wednesday’s report showed 130 absent on account of the bloomin’ plague….What might have been a fatal accident – but fortunately proved painful but not serious, was an accident on Stickley Boulevard near Shady Lane Friday night about 11:30. Returning home from the basketball game, Donald McGeary, Donald Bibeau and Edward Batroot were walking south on the boulevard. A heavy snow was falling, visibility was poor. At the point mentioned, a car struck all three boys. McGeary was rendered unconscious, Bibeau suffered lacerations of head and leg, while Batroot was cut and bruised. All were taken to the offices of Drs. Mclanahan where they were given aid. All concerned are glad the accident was no worse than it was….. 1964 Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Smith of 954 Mahtomedi Avenue were involved in an automobile accident at Hoffman’s Corners and Highway 61 on Tuesday, March 3. Mr. Smith and his infant son were uninjured but his wife Bonnie was taken to St. John’s Hospital with multiple cuts and bruises….. 1989 Mahtomedi’s water and sewer rates are going up. And with the recommendations made by the city engineer in a preliminary water study, residents may be paying a lot more in rate assessments and taxes over the next few years to foot the bill on upgrading the city’s water system….. 2004 Air Force Airman Michael R. Mitchell has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Mitchell is the son of Michael Mitchell of Floyds Knobs, Ind. And Nancey Whitaker of Mahtomedi, Minnesota….
