Matric 2014 pass rate 75.8% - Motshekga Pretoria - The national pass rate for the 2014 matric exams dropped to 75.8%, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said on Monday. The past rate in 2013 was 78.2%, Motshekga announced in Johannesburg, admitting her disappointment. Gauteng was the top performing province, with a pass rate of 84.7%, down from 87% in 2013. The worst performing province was the Eastern Cape, which got 65.4%, an improvement of 0.5% points in comparison to 2013. The provincial results are as follows: Eastern Cape: 65.4% from 64.9% KwaZulu-Natal: 69.7% down from 77.4% Limpopo: 72.9 up from 71.8% Northern Cape: 76.4% from 74.5% Mpumalanga: 79% from 77.6% Western Cape: 82.8% down from 85.1% Gauteng: 84.7 down from 87% North West: 84.6% down from 87.2% Free State: 82.3 down from 87.4% She applauded the education districts for their excellent performance in the 2014 matric exams. However, there is still much more work that needs to be done, she said. A total of 688 660 candidates registered to write the examination in 2014, of which over 550 000 were full time candidates and over 138 000 were part time candidates. A look at 2013 To help you understand what’s changed, improved or declined, here are some key facts from the last round of matric results, which Motshekga revealed in January 2013, as reported by City Press. 1. In January 2013, the pass rate climbed from 73.9% the previous year to 78.2%; 2. Motshekga said she was delighted by the 2013 results, which were the best the country’s matrics had recorded since 1994; 3. The 2013 results were an increase of 17.6 percentage points since 2009 (60.6%), when Motshekga took over as minister; 4. The number of matriculants who qualified to study towards bachelor’s degrees was 30.6% last year; 5. About 551 schools achieved a 100% pass rate in 2013. Nine recorded a 0% pass rate; 6. 67 855 distinctions were achieved in 2013, up from 55 650 in 2012; 7. Motshekga was particularly pleased that the pass rates in two crucial subjects, maths and physical science, had jumped: “The pass rate for maths is 59.1% in 2013. This is an improvement from the 54% in 2012. The pass rate for physical science is 67.4%, from 61.3% in 2012,” she said at the time. 8. The Free State’s matrics were top of the class, scoring an 87.4% pass rate. The North West was second and Gauteng third. 9. The Eastern Cape rounded out the bottom of the table, its matrics securing a 64.9% pass rate. All the results will be available online on the department of basic education’s website at 06:00 on Tuesday.
