Matt. 27:43 “He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.” (The other taunt at Christ came from the religious leaders also. The railing was a mockery about deliverance. They said, “If He trusted in God let Him deliver Him. Let God deliver him in one swift moment. The cry for God to get us out of suffering and heartache can still be heard today. Some use this selfish test to prove or disprove God. God doesn’t answer the way we want in an immediate way because of a greater good which will also be much better than an immediate rescue from pain and suffering. The greater good was Jesus dying on the cross for our sins. God’s love kept Him on the cross and did not deliver Him from the greatest necessity ever: That Jesus pay the penalty for our sins. God the Father did not deliver Jesus so that we might be delivered by Him through the sacrifice of Himself. The thieves did the same in their taunting. The story of the thief who turned to Jesus in faith is not told here. Matthew just did not tell it here. The most logical explanation is the one thief started out taunting ended up trusting in Christ to save Him which Matthew doesn’t tell anything about. May we always trust God for the greater good in situations and not for the immediate release from difficulty even when it means having to endure suffering and pain. God always does what His will is and not what we think He should do. He will never be subservient to our demands but be Lord over every situation doing what is His will. After all He is God!)
