Matt. 6:25-34 God’s Word About Worrying Worry Should Not - TopicsExpress

Matt. 6:25-34 God’s Word About Worrying Worry Should Not Rule Our Lives! Worry about our survival occupies our minds. We have within us the will to live. When we worry only about acquisition of ‘stuff’ our minds become full of ‘stuff’ more than God. The story of Adam and Eve is a story about wanting what was forbidden by God. Every day that I turn on the TV there is an advertisement for an addiction center. We have become a nation of ‘addicts’. We buy more stuff than we need. We overuse medication to relieve our pain-mental or physical. Medication does have its place in our lives. In fact there was medication for pain mentioned in Jeremiah. The ancient city of Gilead was a source of a balm for pain. Jeremiah used the analogy of the loss of ‘balm in Gilead’ to explain the pain of God’s people when they were in captivity in Babylon. Their captivity was the result of turning away from God to worship foreign gods. Jer. 8:21-22 21 Because my people are crushed, I am crushed; darkness and despair overwhelm me. What to do with God’s people 22 Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then have my people not been restored to health? Matt. 6:25-34 In this chapter of Matthew, Jesus explains to us how to prioritize our lives. We make resolutions for the beginning of a new year. We normally forget about these resolutions by the end of January. When we fail, we worry. Jesus tells us to not worry about clothing and food more than we spend time with God in prayer. Matthew 6 contains the Lord’s Prayer. The Lord’s Prayer begins with words of honor to God. Jesus tells us that God knows what we need before we ask for it. The prayer asks for guidance to lead us away from things that tempt us. In today’s passage Jesus tells us to live to the fullest today. ‘Living to the fullest’ does not mean an overfilled stomach or an overly dressed body. It means to live each day with God as our guide. Our mind set needs to change. Our minds should be ‘set’ on God’s compass and clock to lead us where to go and when to start. When we look around us we see God’s beauty. God’s beauty appears in His creation. Think about a tiny flower seed. In each seed God’s ‘blueprint’ for its form, color, smell and life span is recorded. When we look at nature, which we did not create, we see the mind of God. His way is order. The Lord’s Prayer is an orderly written short prayer with no empty phrases. We can ‘speak’ to God with short prayers that honor Him and ask for His guidance in each situation we face. We can live only one day at a time. Worry does not work. Prayer does!! Matt. 6:25-34 25 “Therefore, I say to you, don’t worry about your life, what you’ll eat or what you’ll drink, or about your body, what you’ll wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds in the sky. They don’t sow seed or harvest grain or gather crops into barns. Yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth much more than they are? 27 Who among you by worrying can add a single moment to your life? 28 And why do you worry about clothes? Notice how the lilies in the field grow. They don’t wear themselves out with work, and they don’t spin cloth. 29 But I say to you that even Solomon in all of his splendor wasn’t dressed like one of these. 30 If God dresses grass in the field so beautifully, even though it’s alive today and tomorrow it’s thrown into the furnace, won’t God do much more for you, you people of weak faith? 31 Therefore, don’t worry and say, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink?’ or ‘What are we going to wear?’ 32 Gentiles long for all these things. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 Instead, desire first and foremost God’s kingdom and God’s righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore, stop worrying about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. My prayer for you today is that you live each day in God’s presence, according to His plan. We can only live one day at a time.
