Matt Blackmon writes: This is a must read document entitled BC LNG Reality Check written by veteran Geological Survey of Canada geologist David Hughes. Highlights: 1) Given that 7 LNG projects have been approved by the National Energy Board, BC will have to ramp up gas production from 28 to 150% of total current Canadian natural gas production, most of which will be from hydraulic fracking to supply these LNG projects. This equals a +400% increase in production in BC from todays levels! 2) This equates to more than 50,000 new fracked wells that will have to be drilled over the next 25 years. Each well will consume an average 8-10 million gallons of fresh water per frack (and each well can be fracked up to 18 times)! 3) According to another study, between 25 and 50% of fracking waste water eventually makes it back to the surface contaminating at every strata on the way back up. The implications for fresh water supplies are very troubling to say the least. Read the full report at:
