Matt here. I wanted to relate some sad news regarding a member of the foster teams family. This morning, Emily & Zoeys part time foster Mom had to make the heart wrenching decision to end her sweet boy Dakotas suffering. This is a decision that is never easy and always brings great sorrow, but to remove the pain and to be there for those precious souls is indeed a final kindness given to those who give so much to us. This was something that was anticipated for some time, but it is still never easy to say goodbye to such a wonderfully loyal and loving friend. Dakota had a very rough night and Karen made the excruciating decision to take him to the vet today. Dakota was rescued 4 and a half years ago from a backyard. He had scars from being struck and had a shotgun pellet beneath his skin. At the time he was rescued, he was going to be shot for killing chickens. It was also found that he was Extremely High HW Positive. Medically, there was no expectation of lasting as long as he did. He was treated for his HW issue but his heart was so damaged that he required numerous medications to allow him a decent quality of life. Once healthier, Dakota became a fixture in the household, serving as guardian and protector of the family. He LOVED squeaky balls, car rides and long walks with the family. Over the years, Karens family made sacrifices for Dakota, passing up or shortening social engagements so that someone could get home to give Koda his meds. It was because of the love and devotion of Karen and her family, he far outdistanced his prognosis. It is a testament to the bond they shared as well, as he was her companion and she was his savior. We should all be so lucky to embrace such a special relationship. Even Im his time of failing health, Karens family made additional sacrifices. Now, however, it was for the benefit of Emily & Zoey. Dakota, being the Alpha, hated the girls and had to be separated from any contact with them. The agitation would complicate his heart issues. But still, the family opened their hearts and home to two more wayward souls, in a selfless manner. For that, we are grateful to them and to Dakota, for tolerating the intruders. This morning, Koda Bear got to enjoy some of his favorite things this morning, as he went for a final walk (and loved it so much he did not want it to end), was treated to a final human food treat of a package of salami and a car ride. All with Mom by his side. He is at peace and can run and play, free of pain and suffering. His wonderful memories will keep him alive in the hearts of his family and those memories will bring smiles for years to come. Everyone who has said goodbye to a special furry family member knows the pain and loss Karen and her family feel today. We wish them happy thoughts of Dakota very soon. RIP Dakota.
