Matter in the early universe and chemically reacting molecules are both examples of quantum systems out of equilibrium, a type of system that is hard to describe theoretically or model well with experiment. A group at Princeton is working on getting some general insight: They have designed an experiment with microwave photons in a “leaky” circuit that has the basic ingredients of a nonequilibrium quantum system, but is still simple enough to be described with a toy model.
