Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. b [in the name of] This means "by the authority of." Here it means by the authority of all three persons and not by the authority of Jesus only. He is the one authorizing us to recognize the others as well as Himself. This will help us to understand Acts 2:38; Acts 8:16; Acts 10:48; Acts 19:5. It is by the authority of Jesus Christ that we baptize at all, and it is by His authority that we baptize in the name of (by the authority of) all three persons. c [Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost] Some argue that these are not names, but the dictionary says that the word name is "any word" or "title" by which any person or thing is known. This is not just any Father, any Son, or any Holy Ghost, but it is the Father of Jesus Christ, and the Son of the Father, and the Holy Ghost, the third person of the Divine Trinity. Any Bible reader would know who these three persons are if mentioned by these names in any scripture.
