Matthew 4:19. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” I love “call stories,” like this one where Jesus walks by the sea and calls the disciples and they immediately follow him. My childhood recollections of being called summon images of the classroom, the ballfield, or friendship circles—of being selected because of intelligence, skill, or value. But whenever Jesus calls someone, he calls beyond external qualities into the depths of the person’s being and potential. He calls us from the ordinary into the extraordinary. Perhaps that’s why the disciples went without question or hesitation. There are the named and the unnamed folks who are going about their lives, doing what they do, when Jesus calls them—not for where they are when they encounter him, but for where they will be when they join him. On my desk I have a cup from a friend that reads, “God does not call the qualified, but qualifies the called.” This is a visual reminder that we are all called, and that our calling is not based on experience or credentials but on our willingness to follow and let God make something more of us.
