Matthew 6:7-8 New King James Version (NKJV) 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. If God knows already what we need, then why do we need to pray? I think there are three major reasons why we should pray. First of all God loves us and wants to hear our voice as any parent or grandparent loves to hear their children and grandchildren talk to them. He loves for us to set on his lap and worship and admire him for who he is and doesnt mind if we remind him of our needs. Parents know their kids need food, clothing and shelter and will sacrifice and work hard to make sure those needs are met. Can you imagine your child coming up to you and reminding you he needs clothes to wear today, or food, or shelter? You just want to hear your children talking to you and getting close to you. Secondly, we pray to gain power, strength and wisdom from our Heavenly Faher. Jesus got up early in the morning and often withdrew into the wilderness to talk to God. He even prayed all night before he chose his disciples. If Jesus, who was God in the flesh had to pray, then how much more do we need to pray. In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus said the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. We are told to pray that we have the strength to overcome temptation. We are asked to pray that God would keep us safe from the evil one who loves to tempt and destroy us. And, I think another reason we pray especially corporately is to draw closer to one another. Some of us got together at church on the National Day of Prayer and prayed about different things. Sometimes God allows a trial to come into our lives so we can pray about those things and draw closer together. This works with enemies too, and sometimes enemies can be members of our own family. Its hard to pray for someone and hate them too. In fact if you are really sincere it is virtually impossible. God doesnt need us and He could do everything he wants to on his own, but I think because of the reasons above God has decreed that he will accomplish things on this earth through the sincere, fervent prayers of his people.
