Ive looked at a few sample problems online and the problems that were posted on FB, and while I think they are very different from the types of problems I was given in school, I do think the unique structure of the questions force the students to really learn the ideas behind the mathematics and not just memorize techniques to solve them. To me, thats the better path. I know a lot of parents have issues with the Common Core standards saying theyre too hard, convoluted, etc., but I wonder if some of this is just resistance to change? Is the main objection to the Common Core standards is that they are too hard? Ive heard that teachers are just teaching for tests but isnt that what school has always been? I guess Im just not understanding why forcing kids to learn the ins and outs of mathematical ideas is problematic. (Disclaimer: I dont have kids, so Ive only seen what has been reported in the news and on FB.) Like · · Share
