Matthew has become a homebody the past few days. He has not wanted to go outside or go anywhere. I have respected his wishes and we have stayed at home, working on different small projects and some very nice and beautiful paintings. Also Matthew is in one of his anti-picture modes. He does not want any pictures of him anywhere for the moment. Matthew tells me, “Maybe tomorrow, or the next day, or several days from now.” I am ok with that, just respecting his wishes. These days Matthew is spending time with his older sister, playing word games with her, spelling words together, and talking about boy bands, one of their favorite topics. The two of them are always making and eating pancakes, which is becoming their favorite food, along with lots of fruits and vegetables. For the first time Matthew is insisting on a holiday break from studying. Normally, Matthew and I continue his school work every day and just about all year long. These days Matthew believes he is deserving of a break during the holidays. Today he told me, “I need a break from my studies. It is time to eat pizza, watch some TV, and just relax.” I really become astounded at where Matthew comes up with these complex reasons for not doing something. I have told him we can take a break for two weeks from studying, but he still needs to pick up his toys. I am allowing him to watch a little more TV in the evenings until 10:00 and a couple of times to 11:00. This behavior toward taking a break from school has changed as Matthew has gotten older. Also I have taken all of his written schedules away; just using a verbal schedule highlighting each day’s activities. I have been doing this for a short period of time and it has gone well. The only place Matthew is using a written schedule is at swim lessons (they write the schedule on a plastic laminate so it can be put into the water). Matthew has done very well at swimming lessons by following directions, and becoming a much stronger swimmer.
