Maturity is the ability to look at your life realistically without excuses. How many of us have regrets over choices that we’ve made in the past that have affected our entire lives? Sometimes all it takes is one choice, one moment of insanity, one inescapable decision that has the ability to turn our lives inside out forever. That is the true disadvantage of growing up; our decisions often have lifelong consequences. There is something to be said for the wisdom that age brings (if we are open to the truth and not living in denial or passing the blame along to others)… we learn that life offers us choices galore; but not all of them are beneficial. Sometimes the best choice is to just say no. Daily, it seems, I see families and relationships crumble into dust because someone failed to realize that nothing we do happens in isolation; every step we take eventually becomes known and every action has a built in reaction. I’m sure many of us see things more clearly today than we did when we were in our teens or twenties. Life has a way of teaching us lessons whether we want to learn them or not and none of us is exempt from that reality.
