Mauritania: Two Members of Kafana Opposition Movement, Including Its Head Jacob Ahmad, Arrested By Security Forces PRESS RELEASE Cairo: — The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) decries the security forces arrest of the youth opposition movement Kafana members, including its head Jacob Ahmad, on Tuesday August 5. The security forces arrested the head of the movement Jacob Ahmad, while he was going to question the status of Al-Dah Shin, Field Committee member of the movement, who was arrested on August 5, so as to demand his release. On Tuesday August 5, security forces of Nouadhibou north Mauritania arrested Al-Dah Shin, one of Kafana members, on account of writing phrases, which are against President Mohamed Abdel Aziz, on the wall. Noticeably, the arrest came as part of the repression campaigns carried out by the regime of President Mohamed Abdel Aziz against the opposition. Prior to these campaigns, Kafana movement has been calling for the downfall of the President. Thanks to its activities, Kafana (Enough) movement is considered one of the most important youth opposition movements in Mauritania. The security forces detention of activists is a violation of their right to express their opinion, as well as exercising political action. Such a matter predicts the coming of a repressive era that is not characterized by the democratic principles as claimed, ANHRI says. ANHRI calls upon the related bodies to urgently release the members of Kafana members and all prisoners of conscience. It, as well, calls for ensuring their safety and security and providing the necessary conditions, so as to guarantee the public rights and freedom especially freedom of opinion and expression.
