Max Borjon Big Band entertains near-capacity Friends of Music audience A near-capacity crowd enjoyed the rousing sounds of the Max Borjon Big Band on Sunday (March 9) in the Wickenburg Community Center for the Friends of Music concert. Sounds of bands of yesteryear struck chords (pun intended) with many who grew up with the tunes played - familiar tunes they danced to or played on their parents’ phonographs. Old familiars included “Georgia On My Mind,” “I Get A Kick Out of You” and “Begin the Beguine.” The band gave a nod to greats Ellington and Basie with “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” and “Montego Bay.” Deviating from the printed program, they got an appreciative “Ahh” from the audience with Glen Miller’s “In the Mood.” Leader Max Borjon’s casual demeanor held attention as he reminded the listeners of bandleaders who made various tunes popular. Throughout the concert, he introduced soloists featured and asked, “Where were you born?” of the soloists. He would then ask who in the audience called that their home state. Michigan seemed to have the largest representation. In a pre-concert showcase, Dr. Jay Cravath provided an informative and entertaining time, sharing information from his American Indian studies with songs, shaker and guitar. Happy winners of the Artists in Education drawing were Alberta Duran, who said, “I never win anything,” Michael Edwards and Carol Ferrand. Young helpers who were on hand to draw the tickets were Emma, Alexa and Holly. Next month, wrapping up the 40th season of Friends of Music, will be the Mosaic Harp Trio.
