Max Roach was a native of New Land, North Carolina, an all-African-American unincorporated community near Elizabeth City. He would come home all the time, one of his cousins told me a few years ago when I lectured there on the Carolina Jazz Connection. He would come down to relax and chill out. He would always come to the annual family reunions and say: Damn, there are sure a lot of roaches here. I remember when I put on this selection (all of it), two or three white men walked out. Viva the Carolina Jazz Connection!
