May 14, 1264 - The Battle of Lewes, between King Henry III of England and the rebel Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, begins. De Montfort was victorious. Prince Edward (later King Edward I) was kept as hostage for Henry III’s good behavior. Fulk IV Fitz Warin was killed in this battle. He drowned in the River Ouse whilst fleeing after the defeat of his forces. He is the son of the man and woman believed to be the real people behind the legend of Robin Hood and Maid Marian: Fulk III and Maud la Vavasour. Fulk IV is an ancestor of both of my parents and of my wife as well.
