May, 2010 I was part of the Backing group, Keys, vocals, sax and guitar, at the Library of Congress, Coolidge Auditorium, with a legendary songwriter event, ASCAP presented We Write the Songs, for the House of Representatives, and the Senate. On the show were JD Souther, New Kid in town Heartache Tonight, Tracy Chapman, Dion, Wayland Holyfield, Could I have this Dance Alan Bergman, The Way We Were Hal David & Albert Hammond, To All the Girls Ive loved Before And to close the show, Bill Withers with Lean on Me. Bill who I still perform covers of his hits, will be inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame, in a few weeks, asked me to sing the first verse, after hearing me do it at the sound check. Elisabeth Withers, Tony Award Winner from Color Purple takes over the choruses, and I had my 30 seconds of the mystery voice in the dark, when the lighting people didnt get the memo from soundcheck. Ive had my share of the limelight, but it was a thrill singing this great song for the man himself. At the reception afterwards, Nancy Pelosi, and her husband became new fans. Ive done this show for 5 years now, and its a great honour to work with the best songwriters of pop, soul, country, broadway, and the standards.
