May 25, 1977 was the day that the original Star Wars premiered. I was living in Thibodaux, Louisiana, which back then was a pretty small town so I spent a lot of time in Baton Rouge where my family was. I remember driving in one weekend to see it and being totally in awe because this was a movie unlike I had ever seen before. I had no idea how it would change my life. Through Star Wars, I discovered fanfiction, made new friends in fandom, and fell in love with the idea of The Force. There were no computers back then but there were fanzines and snail mail and thats how we communicated. That was a very happy time in my life back then, and I will always thank George Lucas and everyone who worked on Star Wars for opening my eyes to a larger universe. For a young college graduate just starting out in the teaching world, Star Wars gave me an outlet for stress, a door out of isolation, and so many happy memories. The day I got to hear George Lucas speak out in Los Angeles on the 10th anniversary, I wanted so badly to tell him how much his work has meant to me, but I couldnt. O well. He probably already knows because he has heard it all before, from others. Happy Star Wars day! May be Force be with us all. And let me remember, all my life, that Luke Skywalker is who I want to be......always.
