May 28 Day 1 on our trip from DC to Pittsburgh We started the day today in DC and began our riding on the towpath. We traveled 61 miles to Harpers Ferry. It was a good dry day but the trail was muddy. Had to fix 4 flats and 5 spills through out the day. The falls were primarily due to the mud. It had rained the night before really hard so it left the trail with puddles and mud. Although, with the rain, we thought it was in good condition. From Whites Ferry to Harpers Ferry the trail was in much better condition than the first part of the day. We came across one section that a tree had fell on the trail but we were able to move it out of the way. The first 15 miles were really beautiful and had a lot of pictures. The store at whites ferry was closed due to a flood and were not open. Had to use the water pumps to fill up on water.Stayed at the Econo Lodge tonight and they are great. Have hose and bike rags to clean off the bikes. Had dinner at Anvil and it was great.Tomorrow we are heading to Hancock and will bike around 63 miles.
