May 9th, 2014 Mille Lacs Fishing Report The season will begin in less than 10 hours. There are a few changes this year for “The Big Pond”, you can fish Mille Lacs round the clock for the 2014 fishing opener. The night ban will go into effect at 10PM on May 12th. You may not fish for any species or possess fishing gear on the lake from 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. starting at 10 p.m. on May 12. Make sure you check all the regulations for 2014, if you have questions, Tutt’s Bait Shop is your answer. The lake temperatures can vary as much as 5-7 degrees (sometimes even more) when the lake just opens up. The warmest water is usually found on the north end in the sand, around Big Point. Keep your presentation very slow, small and relatively shallow - many of the walleye are still in the spawning process and will not be as aggressive as they will once they complete their spawn- adjust to them, cause they wont adjust to you. If it isn’t working, try something new. Leeches and Shiners have become the bait-of-choice on Mille Lacs. Thought for you, a medium-sized leech will often out-perform a big fat jumbo during the early weeks of the season. Shiner shortage will happen with late ice-out, especially up north. My advice is to not over-buy this weekend... the size/mix will straighten out soon. Just remember, the best minnow bite for the “ Big Pond Walleyes” is in the next few weeks. Tutt’s Bait in Garrison has ALL your bait needs, they are never short of any bait or secret spot. Make sure you ask for Kurt, he will point you in the right direction. Leisure Outdoor Adventure Opening Weekend Tip: Too much wind and we’ll change tactics and location completely, then head for the shallow rocks. It’s really impossible to try and use a live bait rig because you’ll be constantly hanging up and breaking off. We like to change things up and use an anchor and slip bobber technique. By anchoring up wind of a shallow rock pile or reef you can let the wind drift a jig head tipped with a small to medium leech suspended below a slip bobber, just over the tops of the rocks. I can guarantee you if the wind is blowing there are shallow fish biting somewhere, you just have to move till you find them” Leisure Outdoor Adventures “Making Memories one hook set at a time!” 1-855-LOA-HOOK
