May Dad was in the 101st Airborne during WW II. He fought in every major battle the 101st was involved in he enlisted in 1941 and was discharged in 1946. He was born in Texas and a quote that I have remembered since Junior High School comes to mind for not only my Dad but all American fighting, supporting or working in the factories for “[If this call is neglected] I am determined to sustain myself for as long as possible, and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor and that of his country.” Col. William Barrett Travis said that at the Alamo in a letter to Sam Houston Sam Houston was unable to answer Col. Barrett’s call of the Alamo and it fell. The 13 days that the Alamo stood their ground and died for Texas. Sam Houston could not send help not for the lack wanting to respond but not enough resource and men were available. The men of the Alamo gave Sam Houston that time to raise the man power and resources. In WW II my Dad and millions of Americans did answer the call to defend freedom as with the Texas revolution there were sacrifices Bataan, Corregidor and Wake land but the Allies prevailed in the end as did Texas for the same reasons men/women and resource were raised. Join with me and patriotic American in saying Thank You for your service in the past, now and in the future.
